THE BURIED LIFE: 20 Things I Should Have Known at 20.

theburiedlife:

1. The world is trying to keep you stupid. From bank fees to interest rates to miracle diets, people who are not educated are easier to get money from and easier to lead. Educate yourself as much as possible for wealth, independence, and happiness.

2. Do not have faith in institutions to…

Twitter Backgrounds & Screen Res [Best Practices]

Today, most visitors use a screen resolution higher than 1024x768px. This gives us a bit of insight when it comes to designing for the web. Here’s a quick reference for designing twitter backgrounds:

Remember that Twitter’s background is fixed to the left of the browser while content remains centered. So you need to account for users of varying browser sizes.

Here’s a guide for how much real estate you have for maximum user reach (these account for space taken up by the browser as well, so these px sizes may vary slightly):

  • 66px for 99% of visitors (1024px wide resolution)
  • 194px for 82% of visitors (1280px wide resolution) «recommended
  • 238px for 56.1% of visitors (1366px wide resolution)
  • Up to 520px for 42.3% of visitors (1366px+ wide resolution)

Remember to keep it simple and always test it live. Make a dummy twitter account for testing if need be.

If you’ve ever questioned why Apple has a cult-like following, the answer starts with a golden circle and the question “Why?” From big brands to everyday people, Simon Sinek’s simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership made me think of all the people i look up to in life and helped me understand why I value them.

Some fantastic takeaways from this talk:

If you hire people just because they can do a job, they’ll work for your money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe, they’ll work for you with blood and sweat and tears.

The goal is to do business with people who believe in what you believe, not people who need what you have.

People don’t buy what you do; people buy why you do it.

Martin Luther King, Jr. gave the ‘I have a dream’ speech, not the ‘I have a plan’ speech.
